Originally formed as “The Hastingleigh and Elmsted Branch of the Canterbury Diocesan Association for the Deaf” on 28th June 1948.

The aims of the committee were agreed to be “to help deaf people and people with hearing difficulties in Kent”. On 29th June 1961, it was decided by the committee that the name should be changed to “The Guild of St John of Beverley”, after a gentleman who stood out in deaf history.

 

Although there were originally other branches, at this time it was learned that it was unlikely that there were any other branches left in Kent.

In 1993, The Guild of St. John of Beverley for the Deaf became a registered charity.

 

The Mission, as agreed on Thursday 9 December 1993 is: “To relieve persons who are deaf or hard of hearing, in particular by the promotion of treatment, education, training, employment and welfare of such people in the East Kent area”.
